Cannabis Rx: Cutting Through the Misinformation
09/12/10 By Dr. Andrew Weil

If an American doctor of the late 19th century stepped into a time warp and emerged in 2010, he would be shocked by the multitude of pharmaceuticals that today's physicians use. But as he pondered this array (and wondered, as I do, whether most are really necessary), he would soon notice an equally surprising omission, and exclaim, "Where's my Cannabis indica?"

It routinely receives above 70% in public opinion polls, it has been legalized in 13 states, and this year 18 more states either tried or are still trying to pass medical marijuana laws. A Letter To Growers

Dear Growers,

The harvest is in at the end of Maine’s first season of legal Marijuana growing.

Over the past year you all have worked hard growing high quality natural medicine that has provided relief to people suffering with very serious diseases.   We congratulate you on that.

And at the same time you have had the good fortune of being part of one of the only growing sectors of the economy of a poor state during a long and deep recession.   And you have been the beneficiaries of a movement organizing for the rights of medical Marijuana patients, caregivers, and providers.

So I’m writing today to ask you to give something back to the community in the spirit of celebrating and sharing the abundance of the harvest.

The Maine Marijuana Policy Initiative fought hard to win you the right to legally grow Marijuana for the patients you supply with medicine, and will continue to fight for your rights and your patients’ rights.  There is a lot of work to be done in the coming year -- educating doctors and law enforcement about medical Marijuana; assisting patients, caregivers, and dispensary owners when they face problems with government agencies; and working to change laws and regulations to better meet everybody’s needs.  Your contributions are essential to moving that work forward.

But supporting our work isn’t the only way to give back.   We also encourage you to contribute to people doing good work in your community.  Maybe its a food bank or a homeless shelter helping people who have been hit harder by this recession than you have.   Maybe its a group organizing to help people hold on to and take back our civil liberties.   Maybe its people working to preserve Maine’s wild places.  Or maybe its providing groceries or firewood for a family to know is having a hard time this fall.

Whatever you choose, celebrate your accomplishments by giving back to your community.  Its been an amazing harvest this year. Let’s make sure everyone can share in it.

The Cannabis Cafe in Portland, Oregon, is the first to give certified medical marijuana users a place to get hold of the drug and smoke it - as long as they are out of public view - despite a federal ban.
